Behavioral addictions such as gambling, video games, sex, and shopping share many clinical features with substance use disorders, including etiology, course, and neurobiology. Yet, the treatment of behavioral addictions and substance use addictions tends to be separated. However, we argue that a more effective and efficient treatment approach of addictive disorders is to conceptualize behavioral and substance use addictions as different expressions of a common underlying disorder and, in treatment, to address the underlying mechanisms common to both. To this end, the article presents a developing transdiagnostic treatment model of addictions that targets underlying similarities between behavioral and substance use addictions, called the component model of addiction treatment (CMAT).

Hyoun S. Kim, PhD
Dr. Kim is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Psychology at Ryerson University and the director of the Addictions and Mental Health Lab. His research focuses on transdiagnostic processes of substance and behavioral addictions and their comorbidities. He also investigates the convergence of gambling-gaming (e.g., social casino games, loot boxes) as well as the utility of crowdsourcing such as Amazon's Mechanical Turk in the study of addictive behaviours. His work has been published in multiple peer reviewed journals.
David C. Hodgins, PhD
Dr. Hodgins is a professor at the University of Calgary in the Department of Psychology, with an adjunct appointment with the Faculty of Medicine. His main interests and works lie in addictive behaviours, with a focus on alcohol and gambling addiction, and comorbid psychiatric disorders. He has had his work published in multiple peer reviewed journals.
L.A. Rankin is a social worker with experience in many different settings with a variety of clients. She has worked with dementia and Alzheimers patients, dual diagnosis MH/MR, in a battered women’s shelter, and a rape crisis center. She also has 11 years of experience as a child protective social worker, where she earned certificates in domestic abuse/family violence and substance abuse.
