About the Course

This course challenges the predominant focus on abstinence in Substance Use Disorder (SUD) treatment and explores nonabstinence psychosocial interventions, especially for drug use disorders. This course focuses on a general overview of addiction and drugs and then moves on to Assessment and intervention strategies.

This course is based on Part 1 and 2 of the book, Treating Addiction A Guide for Professionals created by William R. Miller et al. in 2019.

William R. Miller

Professor of Psychology and Psychiatry at the University of New Mexico. Dr. Miller has published over 400 scientific articles and chapters and 50 books, including the groundbreaking work for professionals Motivational Interviewing, Third Edition, and the self-help resource Controlling Your Drinking, Second Edition.

Alyssa A. Forcehimes

President of The Change Companies and Train for Change. Her research focuses on processes of motivation for change and on effective methods for disseminating and teaching evidence based behavioral treatments in real-world settings. Dr. Forcehimes works in addiction, mental health, and health care settings to develop, implement, and evaluate behavior change practices.

Tiara Totten is a Licensed Clinical Addictions Specialist and Licensed Professional Counselor with more than nine years of experience working with adolescents and adults utilizing person-centered, motivational interviewing, solution-focused, and cognitive behavioral techniques to help individuals achieve optimal wellness. She has extensive experience in individual therapy, group therapy and supervision and is currently working on her PsyD in clinical psychology.

Counselors, marriage and family therapists, psychologists and social workers. This course is appropriate for intermediate and above levels of knowledge.

Course Objectives:

After taking this course, you should be able to:

  1. Identify the prevalence and impact of substance use disorders (SUDs) in health and social service settings.
  2. List three ways drugs can be taken into the body.
  3. Describe the historical context and importance of evidence-based treatment for addictive disorders.
  4. Recognize the pivotal role of therapeutic relationships and empathic understanding in treating addictions.
  5. Name four characteristics of successful changers.
  6. Identify six symptoms of withdrawal.
