About the Course

Building on his Coping with Emotions model emphasizing the importance of learning to feel and experience uncomfortable emotions in addiction recovery, Bob incorporates the work of Brene’ Brown and its application to addiction treatment. Participants will learn specific skills to aid clients in coping specifically with shame in recovery.

This course is based on the recorded webinar, Shame Resilience created by Bob Tyler, LAADC-CA, SAP, ACRPS in 2019.

While working in Inpatient, Residential, and Intensive Outpatient levels of care, Bob Tyler has been working in recovery since 1990. He serves as Compliance Officer at L.A. CADA, is owner of Bob Tyler Recovery Services (consulting, CD private practice, public speaking), is Past President of CAADAC, and taught the ethics course at LMU Extension in the Alcohol and Drug Studies Program for several years. He authored the EVVY Award-winning book, Enough Already! A Guide to Recovery from Alcohol and Drug Addiction, and has produced several educational DVD’s shown in over 1000 treatment centers across the country, including Craving and Relapse.

Course Objectives:

After taking this course, you should be able to:

  1. Develop the ability to educate patients on utilizing recovery support and other tools in coping with emotion.
  2. Describe to use chemical dependence groups as a training ground for patients to feel and tolerate shame.
  3. Identify two ways to coach patients to “parent” their inner-child when trauma and/or shame are activated.
