Parent-child Communication and Parental Knowledge of Girls and Their Associations With Substance Use

About the Course

This is a research intensive course. This course examines the role of child-parent communication and parental knowledge between Sexual Minority Girls (SMG) vs heterosexual girls and their association with substance use, including cigarette use. It includes: covariates of sociodemographic characteristics and neighborhood, sexual orientation as a predictor of group trajectory, associations between sexual orientation, trajectory groups and substance use, sexual orientation as a predictor variable, predictors of group membership, and parent-child communication and parental knowledge trajectories as mediators.

Gerald T. Montano, D.O., M.S.

Dr. Montano is an Assistant Professor of Pediatrics and the Medical Director, Gender & Sexuality Development Program, UPMC Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh. Dr. Montano's training in pediatrics and adolescent medicine has provided him the expertise and skills in long-acting reversible contraception, mental health, eating disorders, and gender-affirming care. His interests include increasing health care access for transgender and gender-diverse youth and advocating for government and systems policies that protect and enhance their health and well being. He has had multiple works published in peer reviewed journals.

Michael P. Marshal, PhD.

Dr. Marshall is Associate Professor of Psychiatry and Pediatrics at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine. His academic work has focused on describing and understanding mental health disparities among lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) youth. In addition to publishing numerous articles in peer-reviewed publications, Dr. Marshal's research has been presented at 48 scientific meetings throughout the United States as well as in Austria, Canada, and Mexico.

L.A. Rankin is a social worker with experience in many different settings with a variety of clients. She has worked with dementia and Alzheimers patients, dual diagnosis MH/MR, in a battered women’s shelter, and a rape crisis center. She also has 11 years of experience as a child protective social worker, where she earned certificates in domestic abuse/family violence and substance abuse.
