About the Course

This course is based on the book of the same name by Charles Atkins, MD. Co-Occurring Disorders: Integrated Assessment and Treatment of Substance Use and Mental Disorders is a guide to practical assessment and effective treatment approaches for working with clients with substance abuse and co-occurring disorders. This book/course provides a step-by-step approach, demonstrated through many relevant case studies, giving practitioners the valuable tools needed to improve and track clinical outcomes. This book/course provides effective strategies for treatment and recovery, as well as giving administrators the tools needed to create interventions at the system level, with special attention to regulatory and reimbursement demands.

A course based on the second edition of this book will be offered beginning July 6, 2023.

Charles Atkins, MD is a board-certified psychiatrist, published author, clinical trainer, and the Chief Medical Officer for Community Mental Health Affiliates. He has extensive experience working with individuals with a broad-range of co-occurring disorders, has been a member of the Yale clinical faculty, and is a past regional medical director for the Department of Mental Health and Addiction Services (CT). Dr. Atkins has written both non-fiction and fiction, including books on Bipolar Disorder and Alzheimer's disease, as well as numerous published novels.

Anna Hollis, Ph.D., NCSP, is a nationally certified school psychologist currently living near Detroit, Michigan. She is licensed as a psychologist in 2 states (Michigan and South Carolina) and certified as a school psychologist in in 5 states (South Carolina, Michigan, Vermont, Pennsylvania, and Maryland). She is a member of the American Psychological Association (APA); the National Association of School Psychologists (NASP); the Michigan Association of School Psychologists (MASP); and the Association for Contextual Behavioral Science (ACBS). Dr. Hollis obtained her Ph.D. in School Psychology from the University of South Carolina. Her professional interests include Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT); Positive Psychology; Trauma-Informed Practice; and Urban School Psychology.
