Hispanic Participants in the National Institute on Drug Abuse’s Clinical Trials Network-A Scoping Review of Two Decades of Research

About the Course

This course examines data from the NIDA Clinical Trials Network tracking substance use disorder in Hispanics. It reviews 24 studies. It includes: participant demographics, drug use, co-morbidities, substance abuse treatment outcomes, behavioral interventions, pharmacotherapy, and HIV/risky sex behavior outcomes, with one study on HCV.

This course is based on the article, Hispanic participants in the National Institute on Drug Abuse’s Clinical Trials Network-A scoping review of two decades of research created by Brittany H. Eghaneyan, PhD., et al. in 2020.

Brittany H. Eghaneyan, PhD

Dr. Eghaneyan currently works as an Assistant Professor in the Department of Social Work at California State University, Fullerton. Brittany does research in integrated health care, culturally adapted interventions, and mental health disparities utilizing quantitative, qualitative, and mixed methods designs. Dr. Eghaneyan has extensive experience working on federally funded research projects in the areas of mental health and substance use and she is passionate about the elimination of mental health disparities experienced by ethnic minority populations through the implementation of integrated health care models. Her research interests include Latinx mental health disparities, integrated health care for mental health and substance use treatment, mental health stigma, culturally competent care, implementation science, and psychometrics.

Katherine Sanchez, LCSW, PhD.

Katherine Sanchez, LCSW, PhD., is an Assistant Professor at The University of Texas at Arlington School of Social Work. Dr. Sanchez practiced as a bilingual clinical social worker for 15 years, primarily in medical settings with monolingual Spanish-speaking populations. Her principal area of research is in integrated health care and the provision of socio-culturally, linguistically adapted models for the treatment of co-morbid mental and physical illness. Dr. Sanchez teaches social work direct practice courses. She has reviewed the research literature extensively and written on linguistic competency and patient treatment preferences in the provision of mental health services.

Angela M. Haeny, PhD.

Dr. Haeny is a licensed Clinical Psychologist with specialty in substance use disorders and is committed to eliminating racial disparities and enhancing diversity, equity, and inclusion, which cuts across all aspects of her work. Broadly, her research addresses racial disparities in substance use disorder treatment. She has developed and leads groups focused on healing from race-related stress and trauma. Dr. Haeny has taught courses on ethnic and cultural diversity in psychology, led workshops on engaging in productive difficult dialogues, and led seminars on assessing race-related stress and trauma. She also serves on diversity committees in the Department of Psychiatry and as part of the Research Society on Alcoholism and Connecticut Psychological Association professional organizations.
