This is a research intensive course that examines Mindfulness-based relapse prevention in patients with substance use disorder (AUD) and alcohol use disorder (AUD) with treatment moderates of depressive and anxiety symptoms. It includes: a literature review of Mindfulness-Based Relapse Prevention (MBRP), Relapse Prevention (RP), Cognitive Based therapy (CBT) , Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT); as sub classes of substance use, substance use severity, and depression and anxiety severity.
This course is based on the reading-based online article, Baseline Patterns of Substance Use Disorder Severity and Depression and Anxiety Symptoms Moderate the Efficacy of Mindfulness-Based Relapse Prevention created by Corey Roos, Sara Bowen, PhD., and Katie Witkiewitz, PhD in 2018.

Dr. Roos received his Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology from University of New Mexico in 2018. He is Assistant Professor of Psychiatry and a licensed clinical psychologist. His research focuses on mindfulness-based interventions for substance use disorders, web- and app-based interventions, self-regulation strategies, patient-treatment matching, and harm reduction.
Sara Bowen, PhD.
Dr. Bowen is an Associate Professor and Research Faculty at Pacific University Oregon. Her clinical and research interests include treatment of addictive behaviors and prevention of relapse, dual diagnosis populations, incarcerated adults and adolescents, mindfulness-based approaches to treating addiction and impulsive behavior. Her work has been published in multiple peer reviewed journals.
Katie Witkiewitz, PhD
Dr. Witkiewitz is a professor in the Department of Psychology at the University of New Mexico, Albuquerque NM. Her research has largely centered on studying the process of addictive behavior relapse and empirically supported treatments for addiction. These efforts have led to several empirical investigations on the mechanisms of successful addiction treatment outcomes, as well as the development of interventions to prevent addictive behavior relapse, including mindfulness-based relapse prevention and group-based relapse prevention interventions. Her work has been published in multiple peer reviewed journals.
L.A. Rankin is a social worker with experience in many different settings with a variety of clients. She has worked with dementia and Alzheimers patients, dual diagnosis MH/MR, in a battered women’s shelter, and a rape crisis center. She also has 11 years of experience as a child protective social worker, where she earned certificates in domestic abuse/family violence and substance abuse.
