This material for this course examines issues pertaining to women in recovery groups. The first article tests the efficacy of the Women’s Recovery Group (WRG) vs mixed gender groups. The second article test 12-step groups vs secular recoups including SMART, WGS, and LifeRing for treating addiction. We generally had better outcomes in single gender groups. Secular groups are a viable alternative to 12-step groups, however groups largely vary on recovery goals. This is a research-heavy course.
This course is based on the article, Measuring affiliation in group therapy for substance use disorders in the Women’s Recovery Group Study: Does it matter whether the group is all-women or mixed-gender?, created by Dawn E. Sugarman, PhD et al. in October of 2016 and the article A Longitudinal Study of the Comparative Efficacy of Women for Sobriety, LifeRing, SMART Recovery, and 12-step Groups for those with AUD created by Sarah E. Zemore, PhD et al. in Febraury of 2017.

Dawn E. Sugarman, PhD
Dr. Sugarman is an assistant professor at Harvard Medical School, Department of Psychiatry, Boston, MA. Her research primarily focuses on the use of technology in increasing access to evidence-based treatments for substance use disorders, with an emphasis on special populations such as women and individuals with substance use and co-occurring other psychiatric disorders. Her work has been published in multiple peer reviewed journals.
Sarah E. Zemore, PhD
Dr. Zenmore is a Senior Scientist, Center Associate Director and Training Grant Director at the Alcohol Research Group in Emeryville, CA. Her research focuses on psychological and social aspects of alcohol treatment and recovery; alternatives to professional treatment, including mutual help groups and peer-based approaches; racial/ethnic disparities in alcohol use, problems, and treatment, with emphasis on Latino populations. Her work has been published in multiple peer reviewed journals.
L.A. Rankin is a social worker with experience in many different settings with a variety of clients. She has worked with dementia and Alzheimers patients, dual diagnosis MH/MR, in a battered women’s shelter, and a rape crisis center. She also has 11 years of experience as a child protective social worker, where she earned certificates in domestic abuse/family violence and substance abuse.
