About the Course:

A review article of the contributions of the fields of substance abuse treatment and family therapy for client care and the strategies of the two fields to work in conjunction with one another. The course will present some of the basic theories, concepts, and techniques from each field so they can be applied in treatment regardless of the setting or theoretical orientation.

This course is based on Chapter 3 of (TIP 39) Substance Abuse Treatment And Family Therapy created by SAMHSA in 2015.

Paul Pawlicki, PsyD, received his degree in clinical psychology from the Chicago School of Professional Psychology in Chicago, IL, in 2005. From 2004-2006, he taught courses in general psychology, abnormal psychology, and human sexuality at Collin College in Plano, TX. He currently practices individual therapy at the Department of Sexual Medicine at Park Nicollet Health Health Services near Minneapolis, MN.

Recommended For:

Counselors, marriage and family therapists, psychologists and social workers. This course is appropriate for all levels of knowledge. This material is written at a beginner level.

  1. To identify basic theories, concepts, and techniques from both family therapy and substance abuse fields

  2. To compare the differences in goals/techniques of family therapy and substance abuse fields to prevent misunderstandings in client care

  3. To identify how the fields of family therapy and substance abuse can supplement one another for client service
