About the Course:

This course discusses motives for gambling. It examines: social, financial, fun/thrill and negative affect factors of both problem and non-gamblers in Spain. It also tested Spanish speaking measures. This is a research intensive course.

This course is based on the reading-based online, Reconsidering the roots, structure, and implications of gambling motives-An integrative approach created by Juan R. Barrada, PhD, Juan F. Navas, PhD., and Cristian M. Ruiz de Lara in 2019.

Juan R. Barrada, PhD

Dr. Barrada earned in PhD in 2006. He is a teacher in the Department of Psychology and Sociology in Teruel, Spain His research interests are in psychology and psychometrics and his work has been published in multiple journals over the last 15 years.

Juan F. Navas, PhD.

Dr. Navas is a researcher at Universidad Autónoma de Madrid. He has published 52 articles in peer reviewed journals.

Cristian M. Ruiz de Lara

Cristian M. Ruiz de Lara currently works at the Department of Experimental Psychology, University of Granada. Cristian’s research is focused on Clinical Neuroscience, Cognitive Science and Biological Psychiatry. Combining Decision Making theories with Neuroscience techniques for a better understanding of Psychiatric Disorders, specially Addictions.

L.A. Rankin is a social worker with experience in many different settings with a variety of clients. She has worked with dementia and Alzheimers patients, dual diagnosis MH/MR, in a battered women’s shelter, and a rape crisis center. She also has 11 years of experience as a child protective social worker, where she earned certificates in domestic abuse/family violence and substance abuse.

Recommended For:

Counselors, marriage and family therapists, psychologists and social workers. This course is appropriate for intermediate and advanced levels of knowledge. The content is written for an advanced level.

  1. Recognize Gray’s Psychobiological Model of Personality.

  2. Identify the factors and motivators for gambling and problem gambling.

  3. Summarize which is the strongest motivator in problem gamblers.
