This course discusses long-term heroin injectors in the Mexican-American population. The respondents came from vastly predominate Mexican-American neighborhoods and had long drug careers of heroin use. Most were from Houston, TX, in neighborhoods where heroin thrived, and was part of the culture and addicts “tecatos” were respected. This study uses the life course drug use framework, and interviews respondents from that perspective.

Alice Cepeda, PhD
Alice Cepeda is currently an associate professor in the USC Suzanne Dworak-Peck School of Social Work. Her work has focused on the social epidemiology of drug use and the related health risk behaviors that disproportionately affect urban Mexican-origin minority populations, including violence, HIV/STI infection risks and mental health conditions. Dr. Cepeda’s research has also highlighted the unique gendered experiences encountered by females within this cultural context. Her research publications have explored the complex of social determinants, including familial, neighborhood and socio-ecological factors that contribute to drug use and negative social and health outcomes among vulnerable minority populations.
Kathryn M. Nowotny, MA
From 2009-2011, Kathryn Nowotny served as the Research Coordinator for the UH Center for Drug and Social Policy Research. In this role, I directed NIH-funded research projects examining the social and health consequences of drug use for Latino populations in the United States and Mexico. Her research has been disseminated in 14 peer-reviewed journal articles and 5 book chapters.
Avelardo Valdez, PhD
A primary focus of Dr. Valdez's research has been on the relationship between substance abuse and violence and health issues among high-risk groups. His research projects have been among “hidden populations” such as youth and prison gang members, injecting and non-injecting heroin users and sex workers on the U.S./Mexico border. He has published over 75 journal articles and chapters and academic publications including two books. His most recent book is entitled Mexican American Girls and Gang Violence: Beyond Risk (2007).
Sandi Cardaman has been a Licensed Mental Health Counselor for more than 15 years. She has worked with eating disorders, domestic violence and clients who are working with the dependency system.
