About the Course:
This course examines incorporating alcohol pharmacotherapies for the treatment of AUD in primary care medical practice. It includes: recognition of alcohol dependence as a chronic illness, specialty treatment vs screening and brief intervention, why use medication to treat alcohol dependence, acamprosate, disulfiram, oral naltrexone, extended-release injectable naltrexone, integrating medication for alcohol dependence into clinical practice settings, initial assessment, choosing a medication, combination therapy, choosing a psychosocial intervention, developing a treatment plan, patient awareness, monitoring patient progress, modifying the treatment strategy, and discontinuing pharmacotherapy. This course is designed for prescribers.
This course is based on the reading-based online article, TIP 49-Incorporating Alcohol Pharmacotherapies Into Medical Practice created by SAMHSA in 2009.
