This SAMHSA webinar explores the importance of and strategies for engaging people from the drug-using community with lived experience in opioid misuse prevention efforts. A panel discusses specific strategies for outreach and engagement efforts.

Michelle Frye-Spray is the Associate Coordinator of SAMSHA’s Center for the Application of Prevention Technologies (CAPT) West Resource Team in Reno, Nevada. She has 23 years of experience in substance abuse prevention, workforce development and educational support services.

Gary Langis

Gary Langis is the Technical Assistance Specialist at Massachusetts Technical Assistance Partnership for Prevention (MassTAPP) Education Development Center. He has over 20 years of experience working with individuals at risk of HIV infection, overdose and other drug-related harms.

  1. Identify current prevention efforts, programs, and initiatives.

  2. Define and discuss the role of people with lived experience in substance misuse prevention efforts in a mutually beneficial collaboration with practitioners.

  3. Discuss ways to engage people with lived experience in substance misuse prevention efforts, and describe strategies for engagement with cultural humility and competence.
