Adolescent Alcohol Treatment Interventions

About the Course:

This course examines alcohol treatment options in the adolescent population. The first article discusses brief intervention motivational interviewing in youth ages 14-20. The second article was a pilot RCT studying the differences between outcomes in Motivational Enhancement Therapy (MET) /Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) vs 12-step facilitation treatments in participants aged 14-21.

Maureen A. Walton M.P.H., Ph.D.

Maureen A. Walton, M.P.H., Ph.D. is a Professor in the Department of Psychiatry. She is also the Associate Chair for Child Research at the Addiction Center. Dr. Walton’s overall career goal is to conduct innovative research to maximize public health impact on the prevention and treatment of substance use and violence among youth. She has particular expertise in developing e-health and m-health approaches such as web, text messaging, social media, and smartphone apps.

John F. Kelly, PhD, ABPP
Dr. Kelly is the Elizabeth R. Spallin Professor of Psychiatry in Addiction Medicine at Harvard Medical School-the first endowed professor in addiction medicine at Harvard. Dr. Kelly is a former President of the American Psychological Association’s (APA) Society of Addiction Psychology, and is also a Fellow of the APA and a diplomate of the American Board of Professional Psychology. He has served as a consultant to U.S. federal agencies and non-federal institutions, and foreign governments. His clinical and research work has focused on addiction treatment and the recovery process, mechanisms of behavior change, and reducing stigma and discrimination among individuals suffering from addiction.

Counselors, marriage and family therapists, psychologists and social workers. This course is appropriate for all levels of knowledge.

Course Objectives:

  1. Cite that alcohol misuse increases across adolescent development.

  2. Acknowledge there was no significant difference in results between therapist and computer administered BI.

  3. Summarize that 12-step facilitation is as effective as MET/CBT.
