This course explores outpatient substance abuse counseling. The first article outlines the history of substance use therapy, and discusses a relational model, specifically the application of an integrated relational approach, including person centered therapy, motivational interviewing, and solution focused therapy. The second article is a pilot study testing technology-based interventions for clients with substance use disorders as part of outpatient substance use treatment. The authors used Daily Progress System, a form of Interactive Voice Response to track use and symptoms.

Christine is an assistant professor in the Department of Counseling & School Psychology at the University of Nebraska Kearney. Her teaching and research interests include drug and alcohol counseling and counselor development. She has 15 years of clinical practice specializing in substance abuse treatment.
Steven B. Carswell, PhD, Sociology
Steven B. Carswell, is a research scientist and vice president at Friends Research Institute in Baltimore, MD. His research focuses on the relationship between individual, social, and community risk and protective factors and the incidence and prevalence of youth and adult involvement in health-compromising behaviors. His work has been published in multiple peer reviewed journals.
L.A. Rankin is a social worker with experience in many different settings with a variety of clients. She has worked with dementia and Alzheimers patients, dual diagnosis MH/MR, in a battered women’s shelter, and a rape crisis center. She also has 11 years of experience as a child protective social worker, where she earned certificates in domestic abuse/family violence and substance abuse.
