About the Course:
To change health-related public norms and behaviors, public health organizations often partner with communication scientists. Health-related behavior is influenced by a range of structural, social, and psychological factors, which include access to health-related resources, prevalent social norms, and personal agency and intentions. Communication strategies can influence all of these factors, and communications strategies and communication science perspectives are relevant across structural, public, and self-stigma.
This course is based on the reading-based online article, Ending Discrimination Against People With Mental and Substance Use Disorders-Science of Communication and Ways to Reduce/Address Stigma created by Committee on the Science of Changing Behavioral Health Social Norms; Board on Behavioral, Cognitive, and Sensory Sciences; Division of Behavioral and Social Sciences and Education; National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine in 2016.
