About the Course:

Counselor Competence in Treating LGBT Clients (Chapter 13): From A Provider’s Introduction to Substance Abuse Treeatment for Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender Individuals will help counselors to become more aware of their homophobia and heterosexism, how these biases can lead to mistreatment, and how to monitor and manage their own biases. This chapter will explain how to provide good quality, fair, ethical, and competent treatment to LGBT clients, and how to provide LGBT sensitive treatment. Lastly, it will cover what counselors should consider in treating LGBT criminal justice clients.

  1. Explain the counselor's professional responsibility and how a counselor can help the clients heal from the negative effects of homophobia and heterosexism.
  2. Describe what the counselor can do in order to aid in the "coming out" process as well as to help clients understand their struggle in the context of discrimination and prejudice.
