About the Course:

Understanding the Addicted Brain From Science to Service relates how research advances made over the past several decades have led to a better understanding of the full complexity of drug abuse and addiction and have built a sound scientific foundation on which to design prevention and treatment stragies that work. In addition to advancing the science base about drug abuse and addiction, it is equally critical that the knowledge gained from research be moved from the laboratory to the community. This book covers the following topics: Addiction and the brain; the role of genetics; impact of brain scans; drugs, alcohol and the brain; stress and addiction; impact of gender, violence and comorbidity, and understanding adolescent addiction.

This course is based on the book, Understanding the Addicted Brain: From Science to Service created by Carlton K. Erickson, Ph.D., Nora D. Volkow, M.D., and Daniel D. Squires, M.S., M.P.H.

  3. Explain the effects of stress on alcohol consumption and the impact of gender, violence, and comorbidity.
  4. Acknowledge adolescent addiction and alcohol dependence.
