About the Course:

This course is the second in a series of three brief courses that study key prevention strategies targeting youth violence and substance abuse. This installment focuses on the school and classrooms, identifying strategies for working with troubled youth in these environments. Strategies addressed include school-community program collaboration, prevention policy enforcement, developing behavioral expectations, and classroom restructuring.

This course is based on the reading-based online article, Working With the Classroom and the School Environment to Prevent Youth Violence and Substance Abuse created by National Center for Mental Health Promotion and Youth Violence Prevention in 2004.

  1. Identify strategies schools can develop and implement to assist troubled youth.
  2. Differentiate between strategies presented and choose those most effective for the population with which one works.
  3. Design intervention programs for schools and classrooms based on strategies presented.
