About the Course

The course explain the development of a screening tool used for determining risk level of SUD for adolescents in primary care. Authors used a hybrid of existing screening tools. Given the health risks, and other factors, the authors decided to include tobacco in their measurement tool. Participation was moderate, however based on previous research at the same facility, it was determine that high risk adolescents did not opt out of screening.

Sharon Levy, MD, MPH

Sharon Levy, MD, MPH is a board certified Developmental-Behavioral Pediatrician and an Associate Professor of Pediatrics at Harvard Medical School. She is the Director of the Adolescent Substance use and Addiction Program (ASAP) in the Division of Developmental Medicine at Boston Children's Hospital, which is comprised of clinical, research, training and policy arms. Dr. Levy has evaluated and treated thousands of adolescents with substance use disorders, and has taught national curricula and published extensively on the outpatient management of substance use disorders in adolescents, including screening and brief advice in primary care, the use of drug testing and the outpatient management of opioid dependent adolescents.

Roger Weiss, MD

Dr. Weiss’ career has focused on treatment and clinical research with substance-dependent patients. He has authored over 300 publications, including several books, and was vice chair of the American Psychiatric Association Task Force on Practice Guidelines for Patients with Substance Use Disorders.

Lon Sherritt, MPH

Lon Sherritt, MPH, has been the Director of Research Technology for the Center for Adolescent Substance Abuse Research (CeASAR) at Boston Children’s Hospital for over 19 years. Mr. Sherritt has been a contributing author to over two dozen peer reviewed manuscripts published in scientific journals and is a review editor for Pediatrics and Academic Pediatrics.

L.A. Rankin is a social worker with experience in many different settings with a variety of clients. She has worked with dementia and Alzheimers patients, dual diagnosis MH/MR, in a battered women’s shelter, and a rape crisis center. She also has 11 years of experience as a child protective social worker, where she earned certificates in domestic abuse/family violence and substance abuse.
