The Tennessee Certification Board (TCB) offers a certification for alcohol and drug counselors. This certification is through IC&RC. Tennessee is also a licensure state for alcohol and drug counselors. Licensure is written into state statutes and is administered by the LADAC board under the State Department of Health.

Certified Prevention Specialist Level I and II both require 40 credits for renewals and must include a TCB-approved prevention ethics course refresher (it must be the approved, 6-hour curriculum).

TCB cannot accept training used for previous renewals

Certified Alcohol and Drug Counselor

Must hold a high school diploma. 6 hours must be in a counselor-related ethics course for renewals.

Credential Renewal

40 CE credit hours required for renewal.

You can use Addiction Counselor CE for renewing your CADC I credential.

Any course accepted by TCB is applicable to the CADC I credential.

Certified Alcohol and Drug Counselor II

Must hold a bachelor’s degree in a behavioral health related field (Note: if the bachelor's degree is in a non-related field, the applicant must apply for the CADC I). 6 hours must be in a counselor-related ethics course for renewals.

Credential Renewal

40 CE credit hours required for renewal.

You can use Addiction Counselor CE for renewing your CADC II credential.

Any course accepted by TCB is applicable to the CADC II credential.

Certified Prevention Specialist I

Minimum 120 contact hours of prevention-specific training required. o 28 hours must include the Core Prevention Training Curriculum. o 50 hours must be ATOD prevention specific.

Renewal - Must include a TCB-approved prevention ethics course refresher (it must be the approved, 6-hour curriculum). o Training must be related to the six IC&RC prevention domains. o Relevant college/university courses may be approved toward 1/3 of total training hours (or 40 hours for CPS I). o One quarter hour = 10 contact hours o One semester hour = 15 contact hours o Face-to-face training is strongly encouraged when possible.

Renewal - Must include a TCB-approved prevention ethics course refresher (it must be the approved, 6-hour curriculum).

Initial Credential

120 CE credit hours required for initial credential.

You can use Addiction Counselor CE for earning your CPRS I initial credential.

Addiction Counselor CE does not currently offer any courses applicable to this credential.

Certified Prevention Specialist II

Minimum 220 contact hours of prevention-specific training required. o 28 hours must include the Core Prevention Training Curriculum. o 100 hours must be ATOD prevention specific. o Training must be related to the six IC&RC prevention domains. o Relevant college/university courses may be approved toward 1/3 of total training hours (or 75 hours for CPS II). o One quarter hour = 10 contact hours o One semester hour = 15 contact hours o Face-to-face training is strongly encouraged when possible.

Renewal - Must include a TCB-approved prevention ethics course refresher (it must be the approved, 6-hour curriculum).

220 CE credit hours required for initial credential.

You can use Addiction Counselor CE for earning your CPS II initial credential.

40 CE credit hours required for renewal.

You can use Addiction Counselor CE for renewing your CPS II credential.

Addiction Counselor CE does not currently offer any courses applicable to this credential.
