This intermediate-level course explores the complex relationship between post-traumatic stress symptoms (PTSS), gambling disorder (GD), and comorbid factors such as impulsivity and substance use. Drawing on research involving both recreational gamblers and U.S. veterans undergoing treatment for GD, the course examines how PTSS uniquely predicts vulnerability to gambling in specific high-risk situations, including those involving negative affect, social pressure, and the need for excitement. Clinicians will gain insights into how trauma and psychological traits intersect to shape gambling behaviors, with emphasis on practical implications for assessment and tailored intervention in both civilian and veteran populations.

Joshua B. Grubbs Ph.D. is a psychologist and researcher known for his work in behavioral addictions, including gambling, compulsive sexual behavior, and problematic internet use. He has published on topics related to addiction, personality traits, and mental health, often examining the intersection of impulsivity, religious beliefs, and psychological well-being.
Heather Chapman
Dr. Heather Chapman is a clinical psychologist specializing in gambling disorder treatment and research. She serves as the Director of the Gambling Treatment Program at the Cleveland VA Medical Center and is an Associate Professor of Psychiatry at Case Western Reserve University.
Danny Wamsley is a licensed addiction specialist with a clinical certification with the National Association of Dual Diagnosis (NADD). Danny currently works in manage care as a DSS liaison. His primary goal is to provide consultation to social workers who are involved with child-protective services and In-Home Services. Danny also has 10+ years of experience working with individuals diagnosed with intellectual disability and substance use. Danny’s professional interests include addictions/recovery, intellectual disability, foster care, military, trauma, and domestic violence.
