This course explores the essential role families play in the recovery process for adults with Alcohol Use Disorder (AUD). Drawing from decades of empirical research, it examines how family systems are affected by AUD and how familial involvement can support or hinder recovery. The course reviews various evidence-based treatments, including Alcohol Behavioral Couple Therapy (ABCT), Community Reinforcement and Family Training (CRAFT), and Brief Family-Involved Treatment (B-FIT). Learners will also examine how treatment approaches must adapt to diverse populations, including military families, women, racial and ethnic minorities, and sexual and gender minority groups. Through an integrated review of research and clinical practice, this course highlights the importance of culturally responsive and family-inclusive care in promoting sustained recovery.

Barbara S McCrady
Dr. Barbara S. McCrady is a professor in the Department of Psychology and Center on Alcoholism, Substance Abuse, and Addictions at the University of New Mexico. She is a leading researcher in behavioral treatments for alcohol use disorders and co-developed the Alcohol Behavioral Couple Therapy model. This is not her first work published in a peer-reviewed journal.
Julianne C Flanagan
Dr. Julianne C. Flanagan is an associate professor in the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences at the Medical University of South Carolina. She is also affiliated with the Ralph H. Johnson VA Medical Center and focuses her research on trauma, addiction, and behavioral health interventions. This is not her first work published in a peer-reviewed journal.
Hana Kuc is a Licensed Mental Heath counselor and a Credentialed Alcoholism and Substance Abuse Counselor who has been working in the field for 13 years. In that time she has worked as a counselor, therapist, educator and director. Hana has specialized in working with clients on medication assisted treatment, who are in recovery from opiates, and are also diagnosed with a mental health disorder.
