About the Course

This study compares individuals who consume only alcohol to those who use alcohol in combination with other substances, examining associated patterns of drinking, alcohol-related consequences, and challenges with emotion regulation. The findings suggest that polysubstance users exhibit greater drinking motives, higher mental health symptoms, and more alcohol-related consequences, underscoring the need for tailored interventions.

Dr. Autumn Rae Florimbio is a researcher at the University of Michigan Addiction Center. She specializes in adolescent and young adult addiction studies with a focus on substance use behavior. This is her fifth work published in a peer-reviewed journal.

Dr. Lara N. Coughlin is affiliated with the Department of Psychiatry and the Addiction Center at the University of Michigan. She is a researcher in addiction and mental health with expertise in polysubstance use among youth. This is her eighth work published in a peer-reviewed journal.

Kathryn Held

Kathryn Held, Psy. D associate and CADC III, is an individual therapist at Visions adolescent treatment centers. With a decade of experience in the mental health field, Kathryn specializes in the treatment of anxiety disorders, OCD, and the OCD spectrum. Kathryn also has expertise in working with LGBTQ+ adolescents while navigating complex family systems. Her current research projects include adolescent suicide and the use of OCD art interventions in anxiety and OCD treatment. She is trained in CBT, ACT and Exposure and Response Prevention. Her empathetic and artistic approach helps support, educate, and instill agency in her clients. Prior to joining the Visions team, Kathryn worked in various treatment settings including detox, sober living, and as the Program Director of a dual diagnosis outpatient treatment center.
