About the Course

This course examines alcohol use, abuse and dependence in college drinking for the young adult. It examines developmental considerations, alcohol use and consequences among college students, neurodevelopment, college vs non-college comparisons, risky drinking practices among college students, environmental and temporal risk factors, psychosocial determinants of drinking during the college years, protective behavior strategies, mental health, and intervention implications.

This course is based on the reading-based online article, Drinking Over the Ages-Focus on College Ages created by Jennifer E. Merrill, Ph.D. and Kate B. Carey, Ph.D. in 2015.

Jennifer E. Merrill, Ph.D.
Jennifer Merrill is an Assistant Professor (Research) in the Department of Behavioral and Social Sciences. She has primarily focused on investigating the etiology and consequences of alcohol misuse among young adults, with a particular interest in the subjective evaluation of alcohol-related consequences. In 2014, she was awarded a K01 career development award from NIAAA to examine the impact that event-level alcohol-related consequences have on subsequent drinking decisions among heavy drinking college students.
Kate B. Carey, Ph.D.
Dr. Carey is a Professor of Behavioral and Social Sciences at Brown University. Her research addresses motivation to change substance use, application of screening and brief intervention models for at-risk drinkers, influence of social norms on drinking behavior, and the contribution of alcohol intoxication on sexual risk behavior. She has published multiple works in peer reviewed journals.

L.A. Rankin is a social worker with experience in many different settings with a variety of clients. She has worked with dementia and Alzheimers patients, dual diagnosis MH/MR, in a battered women’s shelter, and a rape crisis center. She also has 11 years of experience as a child protective social worker, where she earned certificates in domestic abuse/family violence and substance abuse.
