About the Course

This course discusses an analysis of language use for couples therapy focused interventions for problematic alcohol examining close relationships use using text analysis. It includes: Automatic text analysis (ATA), Wmatrix, LIWC, family systems therapy (FST) cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT), and we-talk. This is a methodology and research intensive course.

Emily C. Soriano, M.A., is a doctoral candidate in the Clinical Science Program at the University of Delaware, where she recently earned a Graduate Certificate in Statistics from the Department of Applied Economics & Statistics. Emily’s research aims to identify close relationship processes that contribute to the development and progression of chronic illness (e.g., addiction, cancer, diabetes) and can be targeted in interventions. She has published multiple works in peer reviewed journals.
Kelly E. Rentscher, PhD
Dr. Rentscher is clinical and health psychologist with expertise in relationship science and psychoneuroimmunology. Her research examines the biological mechanisms that link experiences of social and health-related adversity to increased risk for accelerated aging and age-related disease in midlife adults and cancer survivors, and how communal coping and other close relationship processes may serve as protective buffers against the deleterious effects of adversity on health. She is an assistance professor at UCLA and has had her work published in multiple peer reviewed journals.
