About the Course

This book provides a well-organized presentation of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual, Version 5 with a focus on changes from the previous version. As noted by the authors, this reference work is a highly simplified and summarized presentation of the DSM-5. As such, this resource serves as a quick reference and memory tool for professionals engaged in the mental health field. In addition to providing all DSM-5 codes, this guide also includes ICD-10 codes.

This course is based on the book, DSM-5 Insanely Simplified created by Steven Buser, MD and Leonard Cruz, MD in 2014.

Steven Buser, MD

Dr. Buser trained in medicine at Duke University and served 12 years as a physician in the US Air Force. He is a graduate of the two-year Clinical Training Program at the CG Jung Institute of Chicago and is a co-founder of the Asheville Jung Center. In addition to a busy psychiatric private practice he serves as Publisher for Chiron Publications.

Leonard Cruz, MD

Dr. Cruz, is a psychiatrist who maintains a busy practice in North Carolina. He is the Editor-in-Chief of Chiron Publications, co-founder of the Asheville Jung Center, Chairman of the Mission Institutional Review Board.

David M. Lutkemeier
David Lutkemeier holds a BA degree in psychology, a master’s degree in developmental psychology, and a doctorate degree from the University of Cincinnati in Special Education and Psychology. He is certified as a psychologist by the Arizona Board of Psychologist Examiners, as well as holding public school superintendent certification in Arizona and California. Dr. Lutkemeier has worked as an assistant professor at Arizona State University, a school psychologist, special education director, assistant superintendent, and superintendent in both Arizona and California. David, working as a consultant with a national curriculum management group (CMSi) has completed over two dozen comprehensive district-wide curriculum audits in 15 states over the past 20 years and has worked as a test developer for CE Learning Systems for the past ten years.

After taking this course, you should be able to:

  1. Identify the significant changes and evolving conceptualizations regarding diagnostic terminology presented in the DSM-5 as compared to previous versions of the DSM.
  2. Explain the reasons for, and implications of, those changes as they impact clinical practice and case management.
  3. Discuss the major implications of employing a symptom-driven system of classification compared to those systems favoring biology, genetics, and neuroscience.
  4. Compare and contrast the DSM-5's new spectrum approach to diagnosis to previous approaches such as this employed in earlier versions of the Diagnostic Statistical Manual.
  5. Describe and discuss the metaphor of the lotus flower as it related to the eight primary psychiatric spectrums.
