About the Course:

This course examines the internalizing and externalizing behaviors among runway and homeless youth with substance abuse. It includes: family factors, externalizing and internalizing problems, substance abuse and comorbidity, and interventions. The study had 3 treatment arms Motivational Interviewing, the Community Reinforcement Approach, or ( Ecologically-Based Family Therapy (EBFT) vs treatment as usual.

This course is based on the reading-based online, Change in Parent-and Child-Reported Internalizing and Externalizing Behaviors Among Substance Abusing Runaways-The Effects of Family and Individual Treatments created by Natasha Slesnick, Ph.D., Xiamei Guo, M.S., and Xin Feng, Ph.D. in 2013.

Dr. Slesnick is a Professor of Human Sciences at The Ohio State University. She specializes in issues relative to families and adolescents and has worked extensively on the development and evaluation of effective interventions for runaway and homeless youths and their families. Her work has been published in multiple peer reviewed journals and she has presented at several conferences.

Xiamei Guo, M.S.

Xiamei Guo has worked as a professor at Xiamen University and has multiple articles published in peer reviewed journals. Her research interests include the impact of the parent-child interaction process on child and parent outcomes as well as mechanisms associated with change

Xin Feng, Ph.D.

Dr. Feng is an Associate Professor in the Department of Human Sciences at The Ohio State University. Xin Feng’s research focuses on the development of emotion regulation and emotional problems during early and middle childhood and the roles of temperament, parenting, and culture in the developmental processes. She is also interested in quantitative methods for longitudinal study. Her work has been published in multiple peer reviewed journals and books and she has presented at several conferences.

L.A. Rankin is a social worker with experience in many different settings with a variety of clients. She has worked with dementia and Alzheimers patients, dual diagnosis MH/MR, in a battered women’s shelter, and a rape crisis center. She also has 11 years of experience as a child protective social worker, where she earned certificates in domestic abuse/family violence and substance abuse.
