The Opioid Crisis and the Black and African American Population-An Urgent Issue

About the Course:

This course examines the opioid epidemic and its impact on the Black/African American community. This population has a disproportionate overdose rate for a specific type of opioid. A one-sized fits all approach is not recommended. A culturally specific terminate that has Black/African Americans as counselors and peer recovery specialist is a way to better engage the community. In addition to adapting current treatment to cultural specifics within the community, this report includes: an overview of the national data, routes to opioid misuse and overdose deaths; challenges to prevention, treatment, and recovery; strategies to address opioid misuse and OUD in Black/African American communities; and standard treatment, and community informed strategies.

This course is based on the reading-based online article, The Opioid Crisis and the Black and African American Population-An Urgent Issue created by Victoria Chau, MPH, Ph.D. in 2020.
