Substance Abuse Treatment: Group Therapy TIP 41 - Why Groups and Types of Groups

About the Course:

Group therapy is regarded as a powerful means of engaging therapeutic forces such as affiliation, support, and peer confrontation to treat substance users within a culture of recovery. Groups therapy is also effective in treating problems that accompany addiction, such as depression, isolation, and shame. The power of the group can be harnessed and directed to foster healthy attachments, provide positive peer reinforcement and a forum for self-expression, and teach new social skills to clients struggling with substance use.

This course is based on the reading-based online article, Substance Abuse Treatment: Group Therapy TIP 41 – Why Groups and Types of Groups created by Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) in 2017.
