About the Course

A large proportion of young and older adults with an eating disorder will report exposure to abuse or neglect (also referred to as ‘child maltreatment’) in their childhood. Given that eating disorders tend to have onset during adolescence, this raises important considerations about whether practitioners are adequately identifying and responding to child maltreatment in their practice. This course focuses on a qualitative study about practitioners’ experiences of identifying and responding to child emotional abuse and child exposure to intimate partner violence when providing family-based treatment to children and adolescents living with eating disorders. You will learn about: (a) the characteristics of child emotional abuse and child exposure to intimate partner violence; (b) factors impacting practitioners’ appropriate identification and response to these forms of child maltreatment in their practice; and © strategies for safely identifying and responding to these forms of maltreatment in clinical practice.

This course is based on the reading-based online article, Identifying and Responding to Child Maltreatment When Delivering Family-Based Treatment – A Qualitative Study created by Melissa Kimber, PhD, RSW, Jennifer Couturier, MD, Daniel Le Grange, PhD, James Lock, MD, PhD, Harriet Louise MacMillan, MD, and Jill McTavish, PhD in 2019.
