About the Course:

The purpose of this course is to provide mental health and substance use disorder professionals the knowledge necessary to assess and treat tobacco dependence in smokers with co-occurring psychiatric and/or addictive disorders.

This course is based on the recorded webinar, Tobacco Dependence Treatment & Behavioral Health created by Robin L. Corelli, PharmD, Gary J. Tedeschi, PhD, and Lesley C. Phillips, MPH in 2016.

Robin L. Corelli, PharmD

Robin Corelli is a Licensed Pharmacist and Professor of Clinical Pharmacy at the UCSF School of Pharmacy who has been actively involved in tobacco cessation-related education, practice and research endeavors on a state, local and national level since 1998. Dr. Corelli’s activities include development, evaluation, and dissemination of effective tobacco cessation training programs for health care providers; training and education programs to promote brief smoking cessation interventions by healthcare providers in a variety of healthcare settings; and provision of smoking cessation counseling to individuals enrolled in group cessation programs in Orange and San Francisco counties. Dr. Corelli has co-coordinated a comprehensive tobacco cessation training program, Rx for Change: Clinician-Assisted Tobacco Cessation, for students in the health professions.

Gary J. Tedeschi, PhD

Dr. Tedeschi is a licensed psychologist at the University of California-San Diego School of Medicine, Moores Cancer Center. He has worked there since 1994 as the Clinical Director of the California Smokers’ Helpline and the Center for Tobacco Cessation. At the Helpline he is responsible for clinical supervision, counseling protocol development, counselor training, and continuing education. At the Center he provides technical assistance and training for medical and behavioral health professionals on tobacco cessation interventions. Dr. Tedeschi also has several years of clinical experience providing psychotherapy for individuals, couples and groups in settings including community mental health, psychiatric in-patient, and university counseling centers. He teaches graduate courses in counseling part time and maintains a small practice in consulting psychology. Dr. Tedeschi holds a Ph.D. in counseling psychology from the University of Missouri, Kansas City; an M.A. in counseling psychology from Boston College; and a B.A. in psychology from Kutztown University of Pennsylvania.

Lesley C. Phillips, MPH

Lesley Phillips is the Training Manager of the Center for Tobacco Cessation. She is responsible for the development and coordination of all trainings and CTC resources. She joined the California Smokers’ Helpline in March 2013 as a Staff Research Associate and currently serve as Training Manager for the Center for Tobacco Cessation. She has over eight years of experience in public health, including health education, research, and community outreach. Prior to her work with the Helpline, she did research and developed educational programs in a variety of settings including a college campus and a rural African community. She earned her B.A. in History from Occidental College and M.P.H. in Health Behavior and Health Education from the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill.

This course is designed for primary care providers and behavioral health professionals interested in the most current research and effective interventions surrounding tobacco dependence treatment and behavioral health. This course is appropriate for all levels of participants’ knowledge.

  1. Describe population-based trends of tobacco use among smokers with co-occurring mental health and/or substance use disorders.

  2. Discuss the factors in mental health and addiction treatment settings that have served to maintain tobacco use in populations with mental health and/or substance use disorders.

  3. Identify and implement evidence-based treatment for treating tobacco dependence.
