About the Course

This publication presents clinical guidelines to help substance abuse treatment counselors address issues that arise from their clients’ status in the criminal justice system and to aid personnel in the criminal justice system in understanding and addressing the challenges of working with offenders with substance use disorders. This course addresses major treatment issues and approaches in pretrial and diversion settings. This course covers Chapter 7 only.

Course Objectives:

After taking this course, you should be able to:

  1. Discuss characteristics of the justice-involved, drug-using population and how treatment services may be part of the pretrial justice system.
  2. Describe key aspects of the trial and post-verdict periods and ways in which an offender may be diverted to treatment.
  3. Identify treatment services that can reasonably be provided in the pretrial setting as well as common treatment issues that may arise.
  4. Explain how to develop pretrial treatment services, and list resources that may be of help.
