About the Course:
While attention has begun to focus on the mental health and substance recovery needs of youth in the juvenile justice system in general, little emphasis has been given to the gender-specific needs of adolescent girls. In an effort to provide an overview of existing prevalence rates, trends, characteristics, risk factors and future challenges for discussion, the National GAINS Center prepared a report. This publication provides a summary of that report, followed by a presentation of critical issues that emerged from collaborative efforts. The last section discusses specific recommendations for enhancing joint efforts in supporting gender-specific, culturally and developmentally sensitive policy and practice.
This course is based on the reading-based online article, Improving Policy and Practice for Adolescent Girls With Co-Occurring Disorders in the Juvenile Justice System created by Laura Prescott
