About the Course:

This videoconference provides an overview of the truancy issues addressed in the December 2004 conference cosponsored by the Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention, the Office of Safe and Drug Free Schools, “Partnering to Prevent Truancy: A National Priority,” and showcases several promising, evidence-based program approaches to truancy and related issues.

The Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention (OJJDP), a component of the Office of Justice Programs, U.S. Department of Justice, accomplishes its mission by supporting states, local communities, and tribal jurisdictions in their efforts to develop and implement effective programs for juveniles. The Office of Safe and Drug-Free Schools (OSDFS) administers, coordinates, and recommends policy for improving quality and excellence of programs and activities related to drug and violence prevention and activities that promote the health and well being of students.

This course is recommended for health care professionals, especially addiction counselors, psychologists, mental health counselors, social workers, and nurses who seek knowledge about truancy issues. It is appropriate for all levels of participants’ knowledge.

Course Objectives:

  1. Explain the scope of the problem of truancy and why the community at large should be concerned about the issue.

  2. Identify the “3 A’s” and the components of a successful school environment.

  3. Describe the components of various evidence-based program approaches to truancy.
