About the Course:

The Iraq War Clinician Guide was developed by members of the National Center for PTSD and the Department of Defense. It was developed specifically for clinicians and addresses the unique needs of veterans of the Iraq War. Appendices provide a range of reference materials.

This course is recommended for health care professionals, especially addiction counselors, psychologists, mental health counselors, social workers, and nurses who seek knowledge about pharmacotherapy for PTSD. It is appropriate for all levels of participants’ knowledge.

Course Objectives:

  1. Identify the circumstances in which it is appropriate to use pharmacological agents to treat the symptoms of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).

  2. Describe the current medications used to treat PTSD and their possible side effects.

  3. Explain factors to be considered in monitoring clinical response and treating comorbid disorders.

  4. Discuss duration of treatment, special considerations for children and adolescents, and the integration of medication with psychotherapy.
