About the Course:

Peyote is a type of cactus that grows in the Southwestern United States and parts of Mexico. The active ingredient in peyote is mescaline, a potent hallucinogenic chemical. Peyote has played a central role in Native American culture for thousands of years. It has been used as a painkiller, a stimulant, and a spiritual tool in religious ceremonies. Only members of Native American churches are legally allowed to possess and use peyote as part of their ceremonies. In Peyote, author Nancy Ross-Flanigan explores the physical, emotional, historical, and societal effects of peyote. She looks at legal issues surrounding peyote use by Native Americans and the extent to which peyote is used by non-Native Americans.
