About the Course:

This course focuses on the results of a comprehensive study of adolescent substance use/abuse conducted in 2005. The Monitoring the Future survey encompassed nearly 50,000 adolescents from over 400 schools nationwide. The study was designed to generate data that provides an accurate picture of adolescent drug use in order to contibute to a greater understanding of the problems at hand and how to deal with them. Numerous legal and illegal substances are included in the survey findings, as are charts and tables providing comparative data from previous years’ surveys.

This course is recommended for health care professionals, especially addiction counselors, psychologists, mental health counselors, social workers, and nurses who seek knowledge about trends in the use of drugs by adolescents in grades 8-12 and the outlook for future prevention strategies. It is appropriate for an introductory level of participants’ knowledge.

Course Objectives:

  1. Identify key findings regarding trends in substance use among adolescents in grades 8-12.

  2. Summarize data presented regarding adolescent use of specific drugs and be able to apply findings to developing solutions for reducing drug use.

  3. Describe the design of the study and methods used to obtain accurate data.

  4. Identify subgroup differences and cite examples of how those differences are reflected in the accumulated data.
