About the Course:

Highlights three emotion-focused treatments that have proven to be effective in reducing PTSD symptomatology. Course content includes three articles from the National Center for PTSD’s Clinical Quarterly: 1-The Effects of Writing about Traumatic Experiences; 2-Exposure Therapies for the Treatment of PTSD; 3-Emotion-focused Therapy for Interpersonal Trauma.

This course is based on the reading-based online article, Effective Emotion-focused Approaches to PTSD Treatment created by James Pennebaker, Ph.D., R. Sherlock Campbell, Mille C. Astin, Ph.D., and Barbara Rothbaum, Ph.D., and Sandra Paivio, and Leslie S. Greenberg, Ph.D.

Dr. Pennebaker a Professor of Psychology at the University of Texas at Austin. He and Campbell wrote the article on "The Effects of Writing about Traumatic Experiences."

Dr. Astin is an Assistant Professor of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences at Emory University School of Medicine and Dr. Rothbaun is Associate Professor of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences at Emory University School of Medicine.
Sandra Paivio, and Leslie S. Greenberg, Ph.D.
Paivio is Assistant Professor of Clinical Psychology at the University of Windsor, Canada, and Dr. Breenberg is Professor of Psychology at York University. They wrote the article "Emotion-focused Therapy for Interpersonal Trauma."

  2. become familiar with myths regarding exposure therapy for trauma.
  3. become familiar with various forms of exposure therapy to treat PTSD.
  4. have knowledge of the benefits of writing about trauma as a means of treatment.
