About the Course:
The objective of this course is to provide vital new information about relapse, it’s treatment and prevention to the professional counseling community. Traditional treatment methods fail with relapse-prone patients. This course will present an overview of relapse prevention and identification theory and research pertaining to relapse in the alcoholic. It is designed to increase the competence level of counselors by training them in relapse prevention technology by describing practical methods of treating relapse the is compatible with the practices of both Alcoholics Anonymous and professional treatment.
This course is based on the book, Counseling for Relapse Prevention created by Terence T. Gorski, M.A. and Merlene Miller, M.A.

This intermediate course is recommended for health care professionals, especially psychologists, counselors, and social workers who seek knowledge about working with clients in recovery from drugs or alcohol.
After taking this course, you should be able to:
- Upon completion of this course, participants will be able to list the sobriety-based symptoms of alcoholism. By recognizing the sobriety-based portion of alcoholism that up to now has gone largely ignored or misunderstood by clinicians, course participants will better be able to support their client through the typical periods of a normal recovery, and identify and treat the factors that complicate the recovery process.
- By being able to define relapse syndrome the participants will be able to recognize the early warning signs of relapse itself and be skilled in developing an individualized relapse prevention plan that involves the client and the family.
- The course will assist participants evaluate and acknowledge the limits of their ability to help. By citing the most common myths about recovery and analyzing what beliefs the participant has that are similar the participant will begin to grow beyond those limits.
