About the Course:

This course is based on two films from the HBO Video Series “Addiction.” *Separate links are provided for each of the two films.

In Understanding Relapse, experts explain that relapse is not the failure of treatment but part of the disorder. Through repeated drug use, the brain’s “stop” system has been compromised, making it difficult to resist drug triggers. Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), recognized as the most successful technique for strengthening the brain’s “stop” system, is discussed.

In An Interview With Kathleen T. Brady, M.D., Ph.D., Dr. Brady, a professor of psychiatry at the Medical School of the University South Carolina and an expert in addiction and co-occurring psychiatric disorders, discusses factors that can lead to addiction or relapse.

4. Identify factors that are important in recovery from addiction, the period of time in which the risk for relapse is high, and obstacles to getting treatment.
