Research consistently shows a high prevalence of suicidal thoughts and suicide attempts among persons with substance abuse problems who are in treatment. This course is recommended for health care professionals, especially addiction counselors, psychologists, mental health counselors, social workers, and nurses who seek knowledge about building an agency capable of suicide prevention and intervention. It is appropriate for intermediate to advanced levels of participants’ knowledge.

Course Objectives:

  1. Discuss organizational assessment and the gathering of data relating to suicidality, and explain the organizational planning process for becoming a Level 2 agency.

  2. Describe program implementation, including the adaptation of existing policies and programs as well as the implementation and integration of new programmatic elements.

  3. Identify ways to help a program develop and improve capabilities in working with clients who are suicidal, and help an agency develop and improve its response to suicidal crises.

  4. Explain how to build administrative support for all levels of the GATE protocol.
