Course content includes two professional articles: 1) Clinical Practice Guidelines for Treating Tobacco Use and Dependence. Published in 2000 by The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services and 2) Reducing Tobacco Use: A Report of the U.S. Surgeon General(Executive Summary)published in 2000. In the first article, empirical evidence and expert clinical judgement are used to derive recommendations on treating tobacco use and dependence. Recommendations are tailored to individuals willing to quit, individuals unwilling to quit, and individuals who have recently quit. The second article covers an historical review, educational strategies, management of nicotine addiction, regulation efforts, economic approaches, and comprehensive prevention programs.
